Case: Semi Crash on Interstate 41 south of Hwy 28
Authority: Sgt. Brad Rodich #416
On 04/17/2025 at 4:06pm, the Washington County Sheriff's Office Communication Center took multiple 911 calls reporting a semi crash on Interstate 41 between Hwy 28 and Cty Tk D. The callers reported that other vehicles were also involved, and that the semi was overturned in the median. Sheriff’s Deputies and State Patrol Troopers, along with Allenton Rescue and Kohlsville First Responders were subsequently dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the driver of the semi was already out of the cab with no apparent injuries. The investigation revealed that the southbound semi suffered a steer-tire blowout while traveling at freeway speeds. The driver tried to maintain control but eventually put the truck into the median. This caused a large amount of dirt and gravel to be projected in the northbound lanes, which caused two additional northbound vehicles to crash. Two of the occupants of one of these vehicles were medically transported with suspected minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Southbound I-41 was shut down for approximately 20 minutes to clear debris. Northbound I-41 was shut down between Cty TK D and Hwy 28 for approximately 5 hours due to the emergency response, debris clearing, and semi recovery and removal. A detour to Hwy 175 was established in the interim. The Washington County Highway Department assisted with the detour and replacement of median cable barrier from the semi crash. The cable barriers were critical in preventing a cross-over collision with northbound traffic. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the initial southbound closure, and the Wisconsin State Patrol also assisted with the detour and with a post-accident Commercial Motor Vehicle inspection.
